Here I Am Again, It's Been A Long Time!
Hello blog world! It’s been about more than a year since I have posted anything on my blog. What should I post now hahaha.. Last semesters of college is always hectic right? I even had to add two extra semesters. Thank God I’ve graduated now! I’m officially a Bachelor of Humanities, yay!
Perhaps, to start again, I’m going to tell about my journey to graduation. I was a German Literature’s student and my thesis is about Berlin in seven German Songs from the 1980s-2013. Why Berlin? My first idea was making a thesis about the Germany’s cities that appeared in German songs. I’m curious about why did the musicians (or song writers) write these kinds of songs and how they described the cities. At that moment I was kind of in a hurry to finish my study so I want to use shorter form of literature work, and that would be from “the poetry family”. I like to read novels or roman or short stories but I was worried that I could spent too much time to read and analyse it (yeah I belong to one of those overthinking kind of people). I want to finished fast because I had plan about going to Germany for FSJ (Freiwilliges Sozialjahr) or Au-Pair and I’m also afraid of paying more tuition and rent for extra semesters. But sometimes God prepared a different chapter in your life’s story, so I got another path.
Turned out my basic idea was not specific enough for a thesis. My thesis advisor lecturer explained (and asked) about many things, if I wanted to write a thesis about the topic. I was stuck; I realized I didn’t do enough research because honestly I didn’t really understand how a thesis works. Just say, I was still in “class mode” not “thesis mode” hahaha. I got a wrong concept at the very beginning.
Then I decided to choose Berlin. Berlin is the capital city of Germany, many songs written not only in German about it, but also in other countries as well. It has a lot of stories and interesting things to write. By choosing the time range from 1980-2013 I could see the transition of Berlin and it’s society through many historical events and how the songs describe them.
I was “lost” at the first phase. Unlike other departments, which most of them only working on thesis in their 7-8 semesters (except if they failed some class), we in German Departments still have classes that we have to attend hahaha.. My mind was really occupied, my heart was pressured. It’s really sad knowing that you could understand almost all the classes you attended, manage to keep your GPA never below 3.0 but you stuck in your thesis because of various factors hahaha (now I can laugh about it hahaha).
And yaaay! Finally after 10 semesters I finished it! On the 20th of April 2015, accompanied with a very thick thesis (130 pages thick hahaha) and prayers+supports from many people, I could pass my final thesis exam. Thank God and everybody involved in writing my thesis. My graduation ceremony was on 5th May 2015 and now I’m working as a junior editor in a publisher (thank you Mrs. Wulan, my thesis advisor lecturer, for telling me about the job vacancy in this company).
So, Blog world here I am again trying to share stories and practice my writing skills!
